NEW YORK - Felix Doubront turned in his best start of the season, limiting the New York Yankees to a single run over six innings, and got longball support from Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava as the Red Sox thumped the New York Yankees, 11-1.????
Doubront, whose spot in the starting rotation seemed in jeopardy only two weeks ago, earned his first win since April 27. He overcame some early wildness (three walks to the first nine hitters) and retired nine of the last 10 hitters he faced, improving to 4-2.????
Mike Napoli's second grand slam of the season paced a five-run third inning and the Red Sox later tacked on with a three-run shot from Daniel Nava, who had four hits. Stephen Drew also chipped in with a solo homer.????
Seven of the nine hitters in the starting lineup for the Red Sox contributed at least one extra-base hit. The Sox collected a season-high 18 hits.????
The Sox got five hits from their Nos. 8 and 9 hitters -- Jose Iglesias and Jackie Bradley Jr.????
Yankee starter Phil Hughes was chased in the fifth inning as his winless streak reached four straight starts.????
Junichi Tazawa, Craig Breslow and Koji Uehara each contributed scoreless innings in relief of Doubront.????
The win re-established the Red Sox' two-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East.
AT A GLANCE
STAR OF THE GAME: Felix Doubront
Doubront set the tone for the lopsided win, going six innings while allowing just a single run to pick up his first win since April 27. He overcame some early wildness (three walks to the first nine hitters) and finished strong, retiring nine of the last 10 hitters he faced.
HONORABLE MENTION: Daniel Nava
Nava had a rough night Friday -- three strikeouts and a double play -- as Jacoby Ellsbury's replacement in the leadoff spot, but rebounded nicely Saturday, with the second four-hit game of his career, including a three-run homer. He also scored two runs.
GOAT OF THE GAME: Phil Hughes
Hughes remains as inconsistent as ever for the Yankees, following a strong outing against the Mets earlier in the week with a stinker Saturday night, during which he failed to get out of the fifth inning.
TURNING POINT: Given how lopsided this one got, the decision to intentionally walk David Ortiz may be where this one got away from the Yankees. Joe Girardi tried to play the percentages in the third and Mike Napoli made him pay with a grand slam that sent the Sox on their way.
BY THE NUMBERS: The 18 hits by the Red Sox were the most they've had in a game against the Yankees since May 28, 2005 when they collected 27.
QUOTE OF NOTE: "I think any hitter, when they see that, it's maybe a little bit of an extra challenge and obviously he responded well.'' John Farrell on Napoli's grand slam following an intentional walk to David Ortiz.
