Cartes is scheduled to visit Madrid on Monday 24 June and later Brussels, where he will be meeting members of the European parliament and officials from the European Commission.
The meetings were confirmed by German ambassador in Asuncion Claude Robert Ellner who together with his peers from France, Italy, Spain and the EU visited Cartes at his home to coordinate the trip and discuss political issues.
?
?We were interested in coordinating ideas and intentions and the president has reiterated how grateful he is for the unconditional support received from the EU?, Ambassador Ellner was quoted in a brief release. The other members of the delegation were Olivier Poupard, French ambassador; Antonella Cavallari, Italian ambassador; Diego Bermejo Romero de Terreros from Spain and Eduardo Lechuga head of the EU office in Asuncion.
The European Union has always expressed full support for the administration of President Federico Franco and now for president elect Cartes to the extreme that it has temporarily ?paused? free trade and cooperation negotiations with Mercosur until Paraguay is actively back in the group.
Despite a tepid opposition from some left-wing German members of the European Parliament and other Socialists, the decision was fully confirmed.
According to Paraguayan diplomatic sources Germany, under Angela Merkel, and France under Socialist Francois Hollande have always unquestionably supported Paraguay.
