Christmas feasting and drinking helped pushed card spending up last month, with the biggest jump in food and liquor sales.
Seasonally adjusted data from Statistics New Zealand shows shoppers spent 0.5 per cent more in the core retail sectors, compared to November.
Across all retail, which includes vehicle-related spending, card spending lifted 0.3 per cent or $11 million, in the third consecutive monthly increase.
Of the retail industries, consumables - including food and liquor sales - saw the biggest increase, with card spending up 0.8 per cent on November.
The next largest spending lift was in durables, including furniture, hardware and appliance retailing, which rose 0.6 per cent.
Fuel was the only retail sector to see card spending fall month-on-month, down 3.5 per cent or $24m.
Including the two non-retail industries, services and non-retail such as travel and health, the total value of card spending increased 0.4 per cent last month.
In actual figures, there were 122 million card transactions in December, with an average value of $56. The total amount charged on cards last month was $6.8 billion.
