Warm Up Winter With Asian Noodle Soups

Most people who know me really well know how much I hate winter.? I hate the cold.? This year in particular has been colder than normal.? Because of this hot beverages like tea and hot chocolate are staples in my household especially during the winter months.

We also drink a lot of soup.? Philip is an expert at creating homemade soups from scratch and tends to make a big post of soup almost every week.? Of course there are weeks when he just doesn?t have the time to make soup from scratch.? For these occasions, we usually have a stock pile of different soup bowls on hand.

We?ve tried lots of different varieties of soup bowls over the years, and was very interested in trying the new Asian Meals Noodle Soups.? I really wanted to try them because we love just about all Asian foods, and these particular soups are listed as being all natural.

They do not contain any of the following:

• MSG
• preservatives
• artificial colors
• 3-MCPD

They are also non-GMO.

Z.E.N. and I spent the day in NYC on Sunday, visiting a friend.? Sunday was a super cold day, and knowing that there was a Duane Reade up the block from my friend?s apartment building, my plan? was to stop in to pick up a few of the Asian Meals Noodle soup bowls on my way home.? I thought that having soup would be a nice way to warm up when we got home.? Unfortunately, they only had one flavor at the Duane Reade I visited so no soup for me that night .? No worries, hot chocolate did the trick!

The next day, Z.E.N. and I ventured out again in search of the soup bowls.? We drove to one of the Duane Reade stores in Staten Island, and when we arrived, went straight to the food aisle.

The soup bowls were available in three flavors, Garlic Sesame, Shitake Mushroom? and Lemongrass.? We purchased all three flavors and couldn?t wait to try them out.

Everything you need for a warm filling meal is included in the package.? The package includes a microwaveable bowl, noodles, a soup base and dehydrated vegetables.

These soup bowls are very easy and quick to make.? There is a microwave version and a non-microwave version.? I opted for the non-microwave version because I am not fond of heating up plastic in the microwave.

To make the soup using the non-microwave method, you simply have to empty the noodles, soup base and vegetables into the bowl provided.

Then add boiling water, cover and let stand for 4 minutes.? See, easy peasy!

Here is the finished product.

I opted to try the Lemongrass flavor first. Overall, it tasted really good, but I was surprised to find that it was pretty spicy.? Z.E.N. would definitely not be able to eat this flavor, so take not if you were planning on serving this flavor to kids.

This week I plan to venture out to the city again to check out the Malaysia Kitchen Winter Market this Wednesday?Thursday, February 20 and 21 at Bryant Park! They will be offering samples of the Asian Meals Malaysian Soup Noodles and will be handing out coupons to buy their products. In addition, restaurants like Fatty Crab, Laut and Nyonya will be selling signature Malaysian street food for $3 to $8.? Photo gallery aims to give foster children permanent homes| WLFI ...

ATTICA, Ind. (WLFI) - The photos on display at the Attica Public Library show kids with big smiles. They're smiles on the faces of children who are waiting for homes.

The pictures are part of the Indiana Heart Gallery. It's a photo exhibit that shows pictures of foster children who are ready to be adopted.

"The kids that are in the Indiana Heart Gallery photo exhibit are currently legally free," Indiana Region Five Adoption Champion Amie Cooper said. "That means their parental rights have been terminated and they're waiting for a family to go ahead and proceed with adoption."

The Department of Child Services uses the exhibit to raise awareness for the roughly 1,100 foster children in Indiana who are ready to be adopted. The gallery travels across the state. Cooper helped bring it to Attica.

"Sometimes when people think about adoption they think about infants or international adoption," Cooper said. "They don't realize there are kids right here in our own community in foster care waiting for a loving family."

"It's emotional for me because I want them to feel accepted and loved," Attica resident Christina Kerr said.

Kerr used to be just like the children in the Indiana Heart Gallery. She became a foster child at 15. She was adopted in 2010.

"You feel no one is going to want you permanently and you're just kind of going to be floating around for the rest of your life," Kerr said. "You want to feel accepted and part of a family."

Each child has a card next to their picture. It describes the child, lists their favorite activities, and describes the kind of family they're looking for.

Carlsberg hit by rocky Russian market and rising costs

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Danish brewer Carlsberg has scrapped its profit margin target for eastern Europe, blaming volatile markets and raw material costs, and damping hopes the region can offset sluggish demand in western Europe.

The world's fourth-biggest brewer said on Monday sales growth had stalled in its key Russian market and the cost of an efficiency drive in western Europe would cap earnings growth this year, sending its shares down as much as 7 percent.

"The change in long-term financial targets is probably the most disappointing element in the report," said Sydbank analyst Morten Imsgaard.

"It helps paint a picture of a brewery which is not entirely in control of factors which are decisive for earnings," he said.

Carlsberg, like bigger rivals AB Inbev , SABMiller and Heineken , is relying on emerging markets to offset weak beer sales in recession-hit western Europe and help it cope with volatile prices for raw materials like barley, energy and packaging.

The group has built up a market-leading position in Russia in the hope its burgeoning middle classes will drive growth and reduce its reliance on western Europe, which currently accounts for just over 60 percent of sales.

However, growth rates in Russia have been has been hurt by a government drive aimed at curbing alcohol abuse, with measures taken including excise tax increases and a ban on advertising in all media, including the internet.

"Several events, both within and beyond our control, have and will continue to impact margins," Carlsberg said as it scrapped its target for an operating profit margin of 26-29 percent for eastern Europe by 2015. The group made an operating margin in the region of 21.7 percent in 2011.

Carlsberg did give a longer-term target for average growth in adjusted underlying earnings per share of more than 10 percent per year.

However, it forecast operating earnings this year would reach only around 10 billion Danish crowns ($1.79 billion) from 9.8 billion in 2012, lagging an average forecast of 11 billion in a Reuters poll of analysts.

"The guidance they give for 2013 is not particularly aggressive." said Alm Brand analyst Stig Nymann. "I don't really see anything positive."

Carlsberg said an efficiency drive in western Europe, which includes centrally managing all procurement, production, planning and logistics, would hurt in the short term.

The revamp, while helping operating margins in the region in the long term, would cost 300-400 million crowns this year, 400-500 million in 2014 and 500 million in 2015, it said.

RUSSIA STALLS

Carlsberg, whose brands include Baltika and Tuborg, said sales growth in Russia stalled in the fourth quarter. That was better than a broader market decline of 2-3 percent, it said, but down from growth of about 2 percent in the third quarter.

Chief executive Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen offered little hope the Russian market would see much improvement this year, citing restrictions on mobile beer stalls.

"Driven by the short-term interruption from the closure of sales from non-stationary outlets, we believe a flattish market is likely," Rasmussen said.

A year ago, Carlsberg replaced the head of Russian division Baltika Breweries to address slowing sales at that time.

Its market share in Russia fell to 38.3 percent in the fourth quarter from 38.9 percent in the third, ending a string of three consecutive quarters of improvement.

Fourth-quarter operating profit before one-off items was 2.15 billion crowns, missing analysts' average forecast of 2.3 billion.

Eastern Europe accounted for 4.6 billion crowns of sales, or around 29 percent, while western Europe accounted for 9.2 billion crowns, or 61 percent.

Last week Heineken, the world's third-largest brewer, reported higher-than-expected 2012 profit on the back of sharply increased earnings from Africa and the Americas and forecast higher volumes and revenue this year.

At 7.50 a.m. ET, Carlsberg shares were down 6.9 percent at 561 crowns, the biggest fall by a European blue-chip stock <.fteu3>.
