2012 Holiday Gift Guide: Elefun Snackin' Safari {Review} | Wee Share

Raileigh really enjoys playing board games.? We frequently have family game nights, and she will often request to play a game together before heading off to bed for the night.? Since Darren and I are board game lovers ourselves, we are usually happy to oblige her request.?

Recently, we have been playing Elefun Snackin' Safari.? This is a new addition to the Elefun and Friends line of games-- a collection that is made specifically with preschoolers in mind.

The game comes with 13 snack cards-- 6 orange, 6 green, and one golden tutti frutti snack cake card.? There are also 2 home base cards and 2 Snackin' Safari elephant heads, handles, and trunks {which you assemble together}.? The game is meant to be played by two players.

There are several ways to play Elefun Snackin' Safari.? ALL of them will get you up and moving.? This is one of my favorite aspects of the game, as there aren't many board games that require any real physical activity.

Our favorite way to play Elefun Snackin' Safari is really easy, actually.? You spread out all 13 of the snack cards randomly on the floor.? Put each of the home base cards on opposite sides of the room. ? Grab your elephant with his attached springy truck and go to home base, then start bouncing your elephant?s trunk on the snack cards to pick up a tasty snack! Once it?s caught, run back to home base and drop it off, then get back to the snackin? as quick as you can! Make a pile of snacks, and if your pile is the biggest at the end, you win!

In addition to this method of play, you can turn all the cards upside down and require players to look for cards of a certain color.? Or, you can go on a mission to find the special tutti frutti snack-- the first one to find it wins!

I really like that there are so many variations of game play.? It keeps the game interesting and exciting.? Though we tend to play our favorite version most often, it's also nice to mix things up a bit sometimes.

Now-- there is one thing that I don't love about the game.? I have a hard time with those Snackin' Safari elephant heads.? Meaning, no matter how hard or soft I spring them, it can be difficult to get them to stick onto the snack cards.? The suction is strong, so I think it's more of an issue with aim.? I just worry that if my aim isn't good enough, then most kids might have a problem with it as well.

Regardless, Raileigh LOVES this game.? She asks to play Elefun Snackin' Safari almost daily and enjoys collecting all the cute snack cards as we play.

Elefun Snackin' Safari is sure to be a hot item with preschoolers this year, so make sure to pick up your copy of this game for all the little ones in your life!

Connect with Hasbro so that you're always in-the-know about exciting new games and coupons.

WHWS 105.7FM Geneva: Hobart Football Off To Minnesota!

?The Hobart football team boarded buses this morning and left for the airport to fly to Minnesota for Saturday's NCAA quarterfinal playoff game.

The Geneva Police Department escorted the team buses from the Caird Center for Sports an Recreation.

The seventh-ranked Hobart College football team will face No. 4 St. Thomas University in the NCAA Division III Football Championship quarterfinals on Saturday, Dec. 1. Kickoff at O'Shaughnessy Stadium is scheduled for noon Central Time (1 p.m. Eastern).

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students. Ticket sales begin at 10:30 a.m. on game day and gates open at 11 a.m.

Making its seventh NCAA tournament appearance, Hobart reached the quarterfinals for the first time in program history thanks to a 35-10 victory over No. 24 Wittenberg on Saturday. The Statesmen ran for 286 yards and five touchdowns against the Tigers and held on to the football for 39:02.

Hobart is 12-0, a school record for wins in a season, and earned its spot in the 32-team field by winning the Liberty League championship and its automatic bid. The Statesmen are ranked in the top 25 in the nation in total defense (3rd, 222.58 yds/g), sacks allowed (4th, 0.5/g), pass defense (5th, 134.5 yds/g), rushing defense (15th, 88.08 yds/g), scoring defense (17th, 14.83 ppg), scoring offense (18th, 38.5 ppg), pass efficiency defense (19th, 101.9), and rushing offense (23rd, 245.25 yds/g).

Junior tailback Steven Webb was named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week after rushing for 130 yards and a touchdown against Wittenberg 35-10. It was his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the year and seventh of his career. For the season, Webb has rushed for 1,094 yards, making him the first Statesman to reach 1,000 yards since All-American Doug Blakowski in 2006.

Sophomore defensive end Tyre Coleman was tabbed the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week, recording seven tackles (5 solo), four tackles for a loss, and two sacks against the Tigers. His second sack of the day resulted in a fumble that the Statesmen recovered. Two plays later, Hobart scored a touchdown to go up 21-10 late in the third quarter. Coleman now has 7.5 tackles for a loss more than any other Statesman in a single season (29.5) and 2.5 more sacks (16.5). Junior linebacker Cory Davis is the Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week. He blocked a punt in the first quarter and recovered a muffed punt in the third quarter.

The Liberty League Rookie of the Week is first-year kicker James Hull. He made all five of his PAT attempts against Wittenberg. For the second straight week, he matched the Hobart postseason game record for PATs made. Hull also eclipsed the Statesmen postseason record for PATs made, raising his total to 10, three more than Eric Ampuja's 2004 mark.

The Tommies are also 12-0 following Saturday's 24-17 win over No. 17 Elmhurst. St. Thomas won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to also earn an automatic bid. STU is ranked in the top 25 in the nation in rushing defense (7th, 75.92 yds/g), net punting (8th, 36.03 net yds/p), total defense (15th, 275.92 yds/g), scoring defense (16th, 14.75 ppg), total offense (18th, 474.92 yds/g), sacks (18th, 3.17), sacks allowed (19th, 0.83/g), rushing offense (20th, 249.25 yds/g), and pass efficiency defense (24th, 102.79).

Hobart and St. Thomas have never met on the gridiron and don't share any common opponents this season. To find common ground between the Tommies and the Statesmen, you have to turn the clock back to the 2011 season. Hobart defeated St. John Fisher 56-20 on Sept. 24 and St. Thomas topped the Cardinals 45-10 in the NCAA quarterfinals.

The game will be broadcast live by WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva). Fans can also follow the action online with streaming video and live stats.

Powerball Winners: 2 Winning Tickets Bought For Record November 2012 Jackpot, Officials Say

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Powerball officials say the record jackpot has been won.

Early Thursday morning officials confirmed that two winning tickets were sold: One in Arizona and one in Missouri. An additional 8,924,123 players won smaller prizes.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and Powerball of 6.

A lottery official said late Wednesday that the jackpot increased to $579.9 million by the time of the drawing, making the cash option $379.8 million.

The drawing Wednesday night's prize followed 16 consecutive drawings that produced no top winner, boosting the Powerball to become the second-largest potential lottery payout in U.S. history.

Tickets were selling at an average of 130,000 a minute across the United States in the hours before the drawing, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball game. That equates to players buying 7.8 million tickets an hour, spending $15.6 million an hour for a chance at the huge jackpot.

The huge sales volume, which was about six times the rate of the week before, prompted game officials to boost the jackpot twice in two days.

An estimated 90 percent of the tickets sold were quick picks in which the players allowed computers to pick the numbers, adding an extra element of randomness to the number choices.

There had been no Powerball winner since Oct. 6, and the jackpot was initially posted at $425 million, which was a record for the game. However, it was revised upward on Tuesday to $500 million when brisk sales increased the payout.

On Wednesday morning it was increased again to $550 million and revised once again prior to the drawing to $579.9 million. That was rapidly closing ground on the $656 million Mega Millions prize of March, the largest lottery jackpot in history.

"Sales have been so fast and so strong it's difficult to keep up with the estimates," said Mary Neubauer, spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery, one of the founding Powerball states.

It took nine weeks for the Mega Millions jackpot to get that high, before three winners ? from Kansas, Illinois and Maryland ? hit the right numbers, each collecting $218.6 million for their share of the split.

Inexpensive Video Marketing Ideas | The Daily Egg | The Daily Egg

    by Ritika Puri 11/28/2012

Thinking of launching a video marketing strategy? Not sure where to start??

Here?s three inexpensive ideas for video marketing for your inspiration.

These video marketing ideas are (1) conversion-driven, (2) awesome for customer engagement, (3) exceptionally creative, and (4) approaches that you can replicate with even a small business budget.

    1. Wrappled: Solve a Customer Pain Point

College friends Albert Alquisola and Alex DeLeon were frustrated with the online shopping experience. They found it boring to browse through long product descriptions and two-dimensional product images. Earlier this fall, they decided to launch Wrappled ? a virtual storefront for gadget lovers?? and?make a change in the way that people shop online.

?They brainstormed a more interactive way to sell things??? through video,? said Wrappled?s marketing director Vicki Chan in a quote for the Contently Blog. ?This way, you can see how something works and is used in everyday life.?

    Conversion Optimization Benefits

Try to put into words the value proposition of a portable smartphone wingstand? That sentence alone might have put you to sleep.

Watch the video instead. Complete with catchy music, fun social settings, and happy product users, the video communicates three compelling takeaways to prospective customers:

    (1) The product elegantly combines form with function
    (2) The product can be used anywhere
    (3) The product ?can make life easier

The video forms an instant bond with prospective customers and adds personality to a product that is essentially a piece of coiled metal.

The best part of the video? Nobody says a word?? the product speaks for itself.

    Ideas Worth Trying

    • Ditch the T.V. infomercial strategy of the ?80s?? let your product speak for itself.
    • Integrate video with your core sales strategy to build an instant emotional bond with your customers.
    • Keep it lighthearted. Don?t want to draft a script? Play some music instead.

    2. Naturally Organic Sleep: Educate via Social

Naturally Organic Sleep is a small business based in Burlingame, California. The company?s owner, Howard Atkins, has two key missions: (1) to help people sleep better and (2) to educate the public about the chemicals in your mattress. While he does not operate an online storefront, he does rely on the Internet to reach prospective customers. He has leveraged and combined the strength of two channels?? online video and Yelp.

While he hosts his introductory video on his store website, he understands the importance of building reach through social media. That?s why he hosts his video on his company?s Yelp profile, a point of entry for many prospective customers to his downtown Burlingame shop.

    Conversion Optimization Benefits

Atkins communicates that he wants his customers to live healthier and happier lives.

Beyond the products that he sells, his expertise and drive to make people happy is core to the success of his brand. His radiant personality and entrepreneurial knowledge illuminates his downstairs shop, and even the best copywriter wouldn?t be able to communicate the powerful relationships that he is able to form with his customers.

Watch his video instead?? he translates complex (and somewhat confusing) topics into everyday language that consumers can understand. In about a minute, he explains that he can tailor each bed to specific customers? needs, strip chemicals to help people with sleep problems, and help people save money by selling beds as an FSA-eligible purchase. You can listen to and learn from him before even meeting him.

    Ideas Worth Trying

    • Build personalized customer relationships by underscoring the key personalities behind your business.
    • Extend your brand?s reach through integration with high-traffic and targeted social channels like Yelp.
    • Emphasize what makes your company unique by guiding prospective customers through a virtual tour.
    • Establish your brand as an educational resource through the use of video.

    3. Dollar Shave Club: Be Hilarious, if You Can Pull It Off

Whoever thought that toiletries could be so funny? The great minds behind Santa Monica startup Dollar Shave Club?s viral video.

The now-viral video takes prospective customers through downright hilarious tour of the startup?s product and warehouse. And that?s the beauty of video?? even the most beautifully crafted blog post can?t capture how funny it is. You have to watch it to understand.

?Buying your razors doesn?t have to be a boring, humorless experience,? said Michael Dubin, the company?s CEO, in a Business Insider interview. ?In my opinion, nothing should be a boring, humorless experience.?

    Conversion Optimization Benefits

Video helped Dollar Shave Club develop an initial customer base and get its business off the ground. Within two days of the company?s launch, Dollar Shave Club?s viral video generated 12,000 customer sign-ups.

?Much of the company?s visibility can be attributed to a video Dubin made about the company that riffed on Old Spice?s ?The Man? commercials,? Wired writer Sarah Mitroff said. ?With more than 7 million views, the video caught the attention of a lot of guys who decided to try out the service, if only to find out how it could possibly sell razors so cheap.?

The key is to be funny while tying the entertainment you?re providing back into your company?s core sales and marketing vision. Dollar Shave Club?s video makes people laugh, but more importantly, it sparks curiosity about its product?? inexpensive yet high quality razors.

    Ideas Worth Trying

    • ?Funny? can be hit or miss, and isn?t for the faint of heart?? Dollar Shave Club?s CEO Michael Dubin had a background in college-level improv comedy. If you?know that you can pull it off, however, put yourself out there. Be fearless.
    • Don?t hire actors. Be yourself. Do it on a shoestring budget like what Dollar Shave Club did.

Have you successfully launched a video marketing strategy? What was your approach, and what did you learn from the experience? What inexpensive video marketing ideas would you suggest?

The Web Is A Great Place To Discover More About Home Businesses

Achieving success at a home-based business is not everyone?s fortune, but don?t let that prevent you from giving it a try. At this time you simply need a computer to create, for a really low cost, a business that you can manage from home. It won?t take much at all. You need a small dose of determination to do the research, and a high-speed, low-cost internet access. A computer-based business has a global reach with unlimited consumers, whereas a traditional business is confined to local custom and has pricey set-up expenses. Everyone in the world with internet access is a potential client.

Click here if you?d like more information.

There are many ways to get your toes wet if you?re really considering a business on the Internet. To make a start you certainly don?t need to be an IT nerd, but being familiar with using a laptop or computer would be useful. Quite often, generating an income online has nothing to do with your technical skills, but with how much you know about the things you like doing. A good example of a web business for folks who are very good at writing would be doing copy writing. Content is often in demand, so a writer could also work on a freelance basis, obtaining writing jobs from individuals who are no good at it. All you need to do is look for those individuals who have a need, such as content, and supply it for them. Write down a few samples of your work and then do a bit of promoting, and you will be in business.

Online auction web sites are another avenue from which a large number of people are making good money. You can acquire items at wholesale value and sell them at full price, or you may already have products suitable for selling online. Getting your product offers looked at by customers is taken care of for you by places like eBay and other online auction sites. Your job is firstly to figure out a price and list your product, then wait for the sales. Once the buyer makes the purchase, you will receive the payment and then complete the purchase by sending the purchaser their merchandise.

Life is getting a lot easier in lots of ways through the advances in technology. The advent of the pc has put ownership of a business within the reach of ordinary folks. The Internet has everything you need to start a business. It offers access to products you can sell as well as information that shows you how to do it. If you could identify a business model that appeals to you and apply it to your own start-up business, that would be great.

Instead of a fulltime business you could just be after another income stream, which the Internet caters for handsomely. Spend a little time on your computer seeking information on starting an online business, and you will find lots of it. Get started on your research and you could soon begin making some cash.

Obama promotes tax agenda, Congress in stand-off

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Tuesday launched a public relations push for his bid to raise taxes on wealthy Americans, but U.S. lawmakers remained deadlocked over dramatic, year-end tax increases and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff."

At the White House, small business leaders emerged from a one-hour meeting with Obama to voice support for his goal of extending low tax rates for the middle class beyond the end of the year, while letting rates rise for wealthier taxpayers.

The business owners urged Obama "to fight to keep the middle class tax cuts," said Lew Prince, co-founder of Vintage Vinyl, an independent music store in St. Louis, Mo.

"What grows jobs in America is consumers spending money, and the average person needs that two or three thousand dollars a year in his pocket to help drive the economy," Prince told reporters at a news conference outside the White House.

Republicans want to extend low tax rates - enacted a decade ago under the administration of former Republican President George W. Bush - for all taxpayers, including households earning more than $250,000 a year.

Raising tax rates on the wealthy would discourage investment and hiring at a time of high unemployment, Republicans say.

Congressional Democrats allied with the president showed no signs of backing down from his stance on raising taxes for the wealthy. But both sides have softened on some long-held positions: Republicans have been showing a willingness to consider new revenue increases while Democrats have relaxed their hard line against new savings to the Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs.

With just a month left before the Bush tax cuts expire and automatic spending cuts begin to take hold, markets were anxious about predictions that falling off the "fiscal cliff" could trigger another recession.

"There remains no clarity on the ultimate status on the Bush tax cuts, which have to be resolved before you can move forward with the remainder of the fiscal cliff," said Chris Krueger, an analyst at Guggenheim Securities' Washington Research Group.

    MARKETS DOWN MODESTLY

Stock prices declined modestly despite government reports that planned U.S. business spending rose again in October and that single-family home prices rose again in September.

Despite a mild sell-off in stocks, the Dow Jones industrial average closed at about 12,878, up 14 percent from a year ago.

Brian Gardner, an analyst at financial firm Keefe Bruyette & Woods, said a limited deal would likely be struck to avert the fiscal cliff, with larger fiscal issues pushed into 2013.

"Fiscal cliff headlines could have the biggest impact on the market," he said. "Over the coming weeks, we expect many headlines that will raise and then dash investors' hopes ... The next three weeks could be a bumpy ride."

Fresh from his November 6 re-election, Obama was set to hold another meeting with business executives from larger companies on Wednesday and then to travel to a toy factory in Pennsylvania on Friday to press his case on taxes.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell ripped into Obama for planning to take his agenda to the public. "Rather than sitting down with lawmakers of both parties and working out an agreement, he's back out on the campaign trail," McConnell roared on the Senate floor.

"We already know the president is a very good campaigner. What we don't know is whether he has the leadership qualities necessary to lead his party to a bipartisan agreement."

Obama last met with congressional leaders on November 16. A follow-up session was not expected this week, but could come next week, congressional aides said.

In the interim, little progress was made over the holidays in meetings between the staffs of the White House and Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner, aides said.

    LEADERS CANVAS RANKS

Ron Bonjean, a former aide to Republican leaders in the House and Senate, said leaders were still checking with their rank-and-file to gauge what concessions they might be able to stomach. In a week or so, Bonjean said, "the level of intensity will go up" with more meetings.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said he was disappointed there has been "little progress" on a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" and warned that "we only have a couple weeks to get something done.

Despite frustration, Reid said he was optimistic lawmakers would avoid plunging off the "cliff," a convergence of an estimated $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts. "I'm extremely hopeful, and I do not believe that the Republicans are going to allow us to go over the cliff," he said.

While Republicans have not shifted from their opposition to tax rate increases, a few have publicly disavowed a no-new-taxes pledge to which most of them have adhered for years, putting tax revenues, if not higher rates, on the negotiating table.

Also on Tuesday, Dick Durbin, a senior Senate Democrat and close Obama ally, urged fellow liberals to consider reforming the costly Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs, signaling possible Democratic compromise in an area where they have steadfastly resisted change.

"Progressives should be willing to talk about ways to ensure the long-term viability of Medicare and Medicaid" for the elderly and poor, Durbin said in excerpts from a speech.

But he added that Medicare and Medicaid should not be part of the current negotiations on averting the fiscal cliff. On that front, Durbin stood firmly with Obama, urging extension of middle class tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans.

Subho's Jejune Diet: 4 Easy Gourmet Non-Vegetarian Recipes

The festive season is getting thicker and thicker, and I have been wondering what I can put out to express my thankfulness for all the wonderful things that my life is made up of. Most of you know how much I love food (Subho's Jejune Diet, remember?) so I thought I will put together some of my older recipe links in one place for you to browse and choose from. Enjoy.

When it comes to a special meal, or when friends or family are visiting, and you feel like cooking something special, do you wonder what to cook? Do you go online to search for recipes? Maybe in your RSS reader items or in your bookmarked pages? Well I do! In spite of having a fair collection of cookbooks, food magazines, crumbly newspaper clippings of recipes, oil-stained heirloom notebooks and scraps of jottings, I still look up gourmet food blogs and recipes on the internet when it comes to making something special. Not surprising, since the internet actually evolved out of a recipe sharing network by the wives of the scientists working on the ARPANET project!! Look it up, I kid you not.

The only problem is that the really gourmet recipes out there are terribly elaborate and complicated recipes, with way too many stages and steps, and the simple four-step ones ones, well, they don?t quite exude that ?special? feeling. The common understanding of a festive Indian meal also means several dishes, with a preface and an afterword. It really is challenging to come up with a simple, one dish and an accompaniment meal that will be remembered for being really special.

As I wrote in my post on Frugal Living Healthy Eating, living simply doesn?t have to mean a life of abstinence and self denial. The same principle applies in the case of recipes. Special does not have to mean complicated, and even complicated doesn?t have to be complicated if you can break it down to main processes and plan ahead a little.

Here are four meat recipes, all borrowed or handed down, that you can use to impress anyone. With a little tweak they work equally well with fowl and lamb. They are simple and unique, perfect for a special occasion. Your guests will go home convinced you spent hours in the kitchen and that you are a closet cordon bleu samurai. Try them and let me know how they turn out.

This is a great dish to use as a starter or as a snack to go with drinks. The best part of it is that these turn out better than and healthier than (and of course, cheaper than) what you would get even at a many star restaurant. This recipe needs planning ahead from the previous day and marinating the chicken overnight, visiting it again roughly an hour or so before you prepare it and putting in some secret ingredients and letting it rest again. Sounds complex? Not really, just plan ahead, break it down, and it actually takes very little time and energy. Plan how many servings you need and your oven size and how many skewers you can load at one time. You may want to get extra skewers so that you can get the next set ready while one set is in the oven. It takes 20 minutes to turn one batch out, and it doesn?t taste as good if it goes cold. Microwaving to warm it up is one of the saddest things you can ever do to grilled chicken. Serve this gourmet kebab and see your personal popularity charts zoom. I give you the World?s Greatest Chicken Kebab recipe.

This is an easy way to make your meal look real classy. Dalcha is a traditional Hyderabadi dish that can pack in quite a punch, both in term of nutrition and taste. It has migrated to many south-eastern Asian countries who have adopted and adapted it into their own cuisines. In some parts of south-east Asia vegetarian versions of this dish have become regular breakfast items. Moreover, it is quite an unique preparation. Although it does not take a long time to make and is quite simple too, you can invest your kitchen time on making just this dish and a good salad or raita. You can order in rumali roti or tandoori naan if you prefer bread (rice or pilaf if you don?t) just ahead of the meal so that it is hot. This simple one-dish combo makes for a wholesome and satisfying meal. Let me know how you like my recipe for quick and easy mutton dalcha.
From the Konkan junction of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka comes the famous Malvani masala dishes. Amazingly simple to make, this recipe is adapted from Poonam Borkar?s Maharashtrian food blog. Though true-blue Konkanis might not agree, this same recipe can be used for making mutton curry too. It is a great hit with rice or roti and is yummy enough for a single item meal. You can consider including a kokum and coconut milk drink and baby shark fry to make the whole meal a Malvani experience. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Malvani Masala Chicken Curry Recipe.

This recipe from Himachal is something I got from my Mom, who got it from a friend, and when I searched on the net, all that I could find was slight variations of the same recipe. So I guess this is as authentic as it gets. With a little less cooking time for the meat, this recipe works equally well with chicken. The wonderful nuances of hing and black cardamom in a yogurt base make this pahari dish an absolute showstopper. Again, deceptively simple, unique in taste, and good for a single item meal. If you are making this in peak winter, you can step up on the spices, and it will fill you with a warm glow after you have it that is really amazing. Here is the recipe of Himachali Chamba Mutton Curry.

I have tried to be as accurate and precise as possible in recording these recipes for you. Unlike most of my favorite (and some male) food bloggers, I tend to lose myself in the pleasures of the dish that I am cooking or writing about and often lose focus. Some of my favorite dishes still don't have photographs to go with them since I was busy jumping and drooling all over the kitchen. As I am but a food hobbyist, and not an expert food writer, it is likely that the instructions can be improved upon. Please do let me know if you find any such lapse.

10 Essential Social Media Tips for Local Online Marketing

10 Essential Social Media Tips for Local Online Marketing

Social Media for small business 350 loop

Recently I was helping some friends get their social media accounts set up for their new coffee shop. A local business like a coffee shop is not going to get a lot of value from many techniques used by content and inbound marketers. Their new coffee shop, Caf? Love in Olympia, Washington, is not going to generate customers with a blog. (Well, they could generate customers with a blog but it would need to be special and that would not be the first thing I would suggest.) Caf? Love will benefit from a social media presence and getting found on internet searches. As I was working with Vanessa and Marty I thought it would be good to have a quick list of the accounts that should be set up.

This list would be great for any business but especially for location based businesses that depend on local traffic and people actually coming into their business. This could include any type of restaurant, or business in the food and beverage industry; services such as barbers and beauty solons; automobile services, pet services, grooming and supplies; dancing schools and music stores; any type of brick and mortar stores; private businesses; franchise businesses; government offices and services; charity and non-profit services; and medical and health services. The exact mix of accounts and what works best for you and your customers may vary a bit but this is where I would start. Remember to experiment, see what works best and to try new things.

    1. Facebook

With Facebook practically ubiquitous in North America it would be silly to ignore this. Remember to set up a personal account first then set up a business page. Once that is done you can invite others to help you administer the page. A few things to be sure to do:

    • Pick the correct category for your business
    • Set up your address so you show up on the map location
    • Put in your contact information
    • Learn about setting up Check-in Deals
    • Create and promote events
    • Adds can be targeted to your locations and to your customer profile
    • Update with photos of your space, products and events

    2. Twitter

You can set up a Twitter account for your business and use it to promote your business, sales and events and connect with your customers and fans. Twitter may not be for every local business but there are a number of things you can do to make it more effective:

    • Follow and promote other local businesses
    • In Twitter Search use the Advanced Search to find people and business in ?places? near you
    • Act like a person people would want to do business with, not an advertising broadcaster
    • Tweet about specials and coupons featured on your other accounts like Facebook and Foursqure
    • Send photos of events, regular customers and products

    3. Foursquare

It is easy and free to set up Foursqure?for business?and Foursqure keeps track of your fans and check-ins for you.

    • Make sure the address is correct so you show up on maps and searches
    • Reward the mayor and frequent customers
    • Set up check-in specials
    • Post new images and photos
    • Connect to your other social media accounts
    • Foursqure Badges are connected to certain activities and businesses and are half the fun. What badges can your customers earn and how you can you make it fun?

    4. Myspace

The obituaries for myspace have been written but I wouldn?t nail the coffin shut yet because it is reinventing itself as the social media location for bands and entertainers. If your location business features live bands and entertainers then set up a Myspace account and connect and promote the bands, singers, comedians and dancers who will perform at your business.

    5. Google+ and Google Locations

I?ve written that Google Places is now Google+ Local and published an eBook on the importance of Claiming Your Google Places. Google is such a big player now that it is important for any location based business to set up a Google+ Business Page and to claim their Google Places. Not only will this help you get found on Google searches you will show up on searches for Google Maps. This is essential especially when people do searches on their smart phones and that is exactly where you want to show up, when people are out looking for your services or product. A few things you should be sure to do:

    • Put in your contact information
    • List your hours of operation
    • Put a link to your menu or web site
    • Follow statistics about views for your listing
    • Use offers and coupons
    • Share updates about events, specials and more

    6. Google Express Ads

In a recent blog I wrote that Google AdWords Express was a great solution for small business marketing. If you have thought about Pay-Per-Click ads but were intimidated by setting up Google AdWords or you do not have a website then this may be a great solution. This is specifically designed for small, location based businesses and is aimed at walk-in customers. It is worth checking out. If you need help we have a free Google Adwords consultation.

    7. Yelp

Yelp is the other big location search engine and it is defiantly worth setting up an account and putting in your business? location and information. Yelp is famous for its reviews and this is something you want to be aware of and to follow.

    8. Punchcard

I do not often push paid solutions but punchard is one that I have recently looked into that I like. It is a loyalty punch card system optimized for mobile applications. Your customers take a photo of their receipt and can redeem coupons and specials from you along the lines of buy 10 lattes and get the 11th latte free. As the business you get an amazing amount of information from your customers who check in so that you can tailor specials, coupons and promotions directly to the customer. For example set up specials for the customer who loves muffins, only comes in on Friday or never seems to spend more the $5. It is worth a look if rewarding loyal customers is important to you.?

Another paid solution that I do not have a lot of experience with but I know others who swear by it is Groupon?and similar coupon services.?

    9. Local Listings

There are a number of other places your business can be listed depending upon your location. Check out the local Chamber of Commerce, local newspapers or your city?s official website. There is often a place to list local businesses. Depending on what is going on locally there may be a website devoted to local businesses or certain types of business such as restaurants or nightclubs. Search for businesses similar to yours and see where they are listed. Most of these sites will at least have a free listing and many will have enhanced services for a fee. What is important to you will determine what will be the best option.

    10. Keep Track and Reward

Remember to keep track of what is bringing customers in. With Foursqure and Facebook you will be able to see who checks in but ask your customers what they are doing and how they found out about you. Run different specials and coupons on different sites and see what generates business. Remember to reward your customers who connect with you on social media and promote your business. If a customer is telling others about you, that is free advertising so thank them from time to time.

What have I left off the list that you think is good for local advertising and social media promotion? Tell us what you are doing in the comments below. If you are a small or local business we can give you a free social media marketing evaluation. Let us know how we can help.

    94% The Sessions

    All Critics (144) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (136) | Rotten (8)

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

Raw, unrestrained and sympathetic without giving in to melodrama, 'The Sessions' is about a man facing a physical challenge who decides he wants to become intimate with a woman.

An intelligent, funny, insightful film that offers a frank examination of sex. It's not prurient or titillating, just truthful.

A remarkable actor, John Hawkes, gives a remarkable performance as a remarkable character.

    Surprisingly funny and touching.

Presents the sensitive O'Brien as a brave, funny, unselfish and unlikely romantic-fantasy dream hero for disappointed, weary or jaded older female moviegoers.

The uplifting struggle for living a life of dignity for paralyzed from the neck down polio victim Mark O'Brien.

The sex scenes are frank and explicit, but never cheap and exploitative. (Yes, they get naked. Grow up.) The nudity isn't airbrushed pin-up perfection, but raw and real - and all the more lovely and moving because of it.

Taking the good with the bad, this isn't a terrible movie, though it is being rather overhyped. I found myself laughing a lot and enjoying the transformations the actors go through, but an unengaging story only serves to drag it down.

A film, inspired by the life of the late poet-journalist Mark O'Brien, that celebrates the relationship between physical and emotional intimacy.

Not just another weepy drama of overcoming odds, a My Left Foot with a different appendage. The Sessions is often brazenly funny, not from shocking dialogue but characters reacting the way people do, especially with such a flustering subject as sex.

an unusually frank and frequently humorous meditation on the transformative power of connection

Take away the nudity and the frank sex talk and you'd pretty much be left with a high-minded TV movie -- with unusually good actors.

Hunt's tangible disregard for false modesty does justice to the misunderstood surrogacy profession, while Hawkes' committed yet matter-of-fact portrayal of O'Brien masterfully avoids theatricality or sappy heartstring tugging.

Lewin has never had talent like Hawkes, Hunt, and Macy as his instruments before, and he makes the best of them.

Popular sex therapist Dr. Ruth once said that sexual surrogates are "illegal." The Sessions makes them mainstream.

An adult film that approaches the serious subject of sex with refreshingly explicit honesty.

The honest performances and assured direction makes The Sessions an extremely accomplished film that celebrates sexuality.

John Hawkes and Helen Hunt generate an endearing chemistry, here, turning in a couple of virtuoso performances deserving of serious consideration come Oscar season.

Writer-director Ben Lewin has made the decision to position the film somewhere between the comedic and dramatic genres.... and it works.

Scientist dig deep into mine in search of dark matter

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Scientists hoping to detect dark matter deep in a former South Dakota gold mine have taken the last major step before flipping the switch on their delicate experiment and say they may be ready to begin collecting data as early as February.

What's regarded as the world's most sensitive dark matter detector was lowered earlier this month into a 70,000-gallon water tank nearly a mile beneath the earth's surface, shrouding it in enough insulation to hopefully isolate dark matter from the cosmic radiation that makes it impossible to detect above ground.

And if all goes as planned, the data that begins flowing could answer age-old questions about the universe and its origins, scientists said Monday.

"We might well uncover something fantastic," said Harry Nelson, a professor of physics at University of California, Santa Barbara and a principal investigator on the Large Underground Xenon experiment. "One thing about our field is that it's kind of brutal in that we know it's expensive and we work hard to only do experiments that are really important."

This one hasn't been cheap, at about $10 million, but like the discovery of the Higgs boson ? dubbed the "God particle" by some ? earlier this year in Switzerland, the detection of dark matter would be a seismic occurrence in the scientific community.

Scientists know dark matter exists by its gravitational pull but, unlike regular matter and antimatter, it's so far been undetectable. Regular matter accounts for about 4 percent of the universe's mass, and dark matter makes up about 25 percent. The rest is dark energy, which is also a mystery.

The search in South Dakota began in 2003 after the Homestake Gold Mine in the Black Hills' Lead, S.D., shuttered for good. Scientists called dibs on the site, and in July, after years of fundraising and planning, the LUX detector moved into the Sanford Underground Research Facility, 4,850 feet below the earth's surface. It took two days to ease the phone booth-sized detector down the once-filthy shaft and walkways that originally opened for mining in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush.

There, the device was further insulated from cosmic radiation by being submerged in water that's run through reverse osmosis filters to deionize and clean it.

"The construction phase is winding down, and now we're starting the commissioning phase, meaning we start to operate the systems underground," said Jeremy Mock, a graduate student at the University of California, Davis who has worked on the LUX experiment for five years.

Carefully submerging the delicate detector into its final home ? a water-filled vat that's 20 feet tall and 25 feet in diameter ? took more than two months, Mock said.

Scientists are currently working to finish the plumbing needed to keep the xenon as clean as possible. The xenon, in both liquid and gas form, will fill the detector and be continuously circulated through a purifier that works much like a dialysis machine, pulling the substance out to remove impurities before pushing it back into the detector.

Keeping the water and xenon pristine will help remove what Nelson called "fake sources" ? or stuff that scientists have seen before, such as radiation, that could serve as false alarms in their efforts to detect dark matter.

Nelson likens the experiment to Sherlock Holmes' approach to discovering the unknown by eliminating the known.

Once the data start to flow, it'll take a month or two before the detector is sensitive enough to claim the "most-sensitive" title, Nelson said.

After that, the scientists involved hope to start seeing what they covet most: something they've never seen before.

French football: PSG in 'crisis' after home defeat to Rennes

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti responded to Saturday?s embarrassing 2-1 home defeat to Rennes by saying for the first time that the big-spending club was in crisis.

PSG again failed to deliver without Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack as it slipped to a second straight home defeat in the French league. Worse still, they failed to beat a side which played for most of the second half with nine players.

    ?

This time, there was no blaming the referee or protecting the players, as Ancelotti lambasted his underperforming stars.

    ?

?I?m very angry. I don?t think we showed the right attitude out on the pitch. It?s a very difficult time for us,? Ancelotti said. ?Yes. I?m not afraid to say we?re in crisis. We have to get out of it quickly.?

    ?

Although PSG still top the league, it has only one point from its last three games.

?Sometimes we play too much as individuals,? Ancelotti said. ?We need to be more attentive, concentrate more, more of everything. In every game we?ve played at home, we always have problems at the start of games.?

    ?

Marseille are behind only on goal difference and have two games in hand, while third-place Saint-Etienne and fifth-place Lyon are just one point behind PSG in third place. Rennes are provisionally in sixth place after its sixth straight win.

    ?

None of those clubs have spent anything remotely close to the ?160 million PSG splurged on new players this season, adding to the already massive outlay of around ?106 million last term.

    ?

PSG could find themselves down in third place after Sunday?s matches, when Marseille are away to Bordeaux where they has not won since 1977, and Lyon host Reims.

    ?

?The problem is with the attitudes. Something has to be changed and we will do it,? Ancelotti said. ?Two defeats in a row at home is not acceptable. We?re not a team yet, we will change things.?

    ?

Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti was understandably thrilled with his team.

?The players were fantastic, heroic, in extreme conditions,? Antonetti said. ?This is an important victory. People often reproached our lack of character, but tonight we showed that we have some.?

    ?

Ibrahimovic was suspended for the match at the Parc des Princes after being sent off in a 2-1 loss to Saint-Etienne, also at home.

    ?

Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil was red-carded after just 25 minutes with the score at 1-1, and then midfielder Jean II Makoun was sent off in the 51st.

    ?

Midfielder Romain Alessandrini continued his habit of scoring spectacular goals when he put the visitors ahead with a superb volley from 20 yards out.

    ?

Nene equalized midway through the first half with a clinical finish after being set up by playmaker Javier Pastore, with both players making a statement to Ancelotti after being dropped in recent games.

    ?

Nene was last season?s top scorer with 21 league goals, but has received little explanation for being left out of the starting lineup for more than half the games this term.

    ?

Last weekend, PSG drew 1-1 away to defending champion Montpellier after center half Mamadou Sakho was sent off in the ninth minute ? prompting a rant from sporting director Leonardo and criticism of the referee from Ancelotti.?Both are set to appear before the French Football Federation ethics committee for their comments.

    ?

But this time, Rennes were dealt a harsh blow when Costil was sent off for a foul on Jeremy Menez outside the penalty box.

    ?

Despite being a man down, Rennes took the lead in the 34th when Feret delightfully curled a free kick around the wall.

    ?

Makoun got his marching orders early into the second half. Moments before he was sent off, the Cameroon midfielder saw his header well saved by Salvatore Sirigu as Rennes kept attacking, even with a man less.

    ?

But tiredness kicked in and Rennes? players started to flag. Center backs Thiago Silva and Alex went close with headers and substitute Guillaume Hoarau and Pastore hit the woodwork twice in 10 seconds as PSG desperately chased the equalizer.

    ?

Ancelotti brought on another forward in Kevin Gameiro as PSG poured forward. But substitute keeper Cheick N?Diaye held firm as he kept out efforts from Pastore, twice, Gameiro and Alex.

    ?

    In other results: Ajaccio 0, Sochaux 1; Brest 3, Bastia 0; Evian 2, Saint-Etienne 2; Troyes 3, Nancy 3, and Valenciennes 1, Montpellier 1.

    ?

Saint-Etienne missed the chance to overtake PSG after throwing away a 2-0 lead, with winger Max-Alain Gradel getting both goals.

    ?

Nice face Toulouse in Sunday?s other game.

River North Dance Chicago | 2012 Fall Engagement | Dance review ...

Concert dance and entertainment can sometimes feel like oil and vinegar: the mix doesn?t cohesively bind, but it still mixes. The mission of River North artistic director Frank Chaves has been to work with that concert/entertainment combo, making a nice vinaigrette, as it were.

And after twenty years on the job, Chaves has made something tasty, playing to the base of the company's supporters, but offering enough broad appeal to satisfy the casual dance fan. Part of his success has to do with his philosophy: that concert dance and entertainment are not mutually exclusive. He said as much during a brief pause in the abbreviated program last night at the Harris. (The company honored its tireless leader for two decades of service, in front of a packed house of special guests.) Chaves, though, is smart enough to know that his philosophy isn?t the only one out there. Keep within the troupe?s label, yes, but expand the range with works that are less jazz and entertainment, maybe more contemporary or more modern.

Take Adam Barruch, for example, recruited by Chaves for the 2012 Fall Engagement. The Juilliard grad premieres I Close My Eyes Until the End, a placid, fervent take on the subconscious and the conscious. The opening is decidedly contemporary, before a shift in the music, when the score changes and the dance leans slightly jazzier. But we?re talking jazzy, not flashy; the difference of which is measured more by energy and less Fosse. And there is a difference.

Nejla Yatkin?another Chaves recruit?premieres the divinely elegant, darkly lit solo Renatus, performed by company dancer Jessica Wolfrum. It?s a tour de force, as aesthetically pleasing as it is emotionally perturbed. Draped in a flowing red gown, Wolfrum moves her shoulders and back in almost excruciating fashion?nearly every detail of the shoulder blades and the joints become noticeable with in the spotlight of white light. The stage is a black canvas, the red of the gown washing over the black. It?s rife with irony, as the gown?so beautiful, so elegant?acts like a figurative burden and a literal weight on Wolfrum?s shoulders.

Then, it?s back to basics; Chaves adds his piece Forbidden Boundaries to the program. The dancers wear skimpy, white elastics, which make for inventive ways of stretching and plying, most notably during a trio (one woman, two men) engaged in aerial stunts without the harness. The work makes a nice closer, though extends its reach a tad further than it should, an ending that would do well to combine the last two sections of the four-part piece. Knowing Chaves, he?d make the combo work just fine.

Ask for a Performance Review within Six Months of Taking a New Job to Boost Your Salary

Ask for a Performance Review within Six Months of Taking a New Job to Boost Your SalaryTaking on a new job also means negotiating a new salary, and that means you might have to accept a little less than you want at first. If that's the case, Psychology Today recommends you ask right away for a performance review within six months to possibly negotiate a raise.

Taking a little less salary than you believe you deserve stinks, but sometimes it's necessary so you can end up where you want. If it is less, Psychology Today has a very simple line you can give the hiring manager during the salary negotiation part of the interview:

"I was hoping to make somewhat more. I hope it will be possible to evaluate my performance earlier than you might otherwise do-let's say, in six months-to determine if you think I might be worth more."

The statement works for a couple reasons. First off, it suggests you're both self-confident and ambitious. It's also a pretty reasonable request that most hiring managers will agree to. The bonus is that if the company typically doles out raises once a year, you're already ahead of the curve.

EU countries to discuss caps on banker bonuses

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union countries will consider a proposal this week for an absolute cap on the total bonus paid to bankers, EU officials said on Sunday, a reform Britain is unlikely to support.

The idea to cap total bonus payouts, including share options, at between three and five times salary, will be discussed at a meeting of EU diplomats and lawmakers on Monday alongside a suggestion to limit just the cash bonus bankers receive to the level of their salary, one of the officials said.

A cap would represent the most radical clamp down yet on banker pay in Europe. It would, however, be politically difficult to push through such a reform if Britain, as expected, objects.

Its finance minister, George Osborne, who wants to protect London's position as Europe's top financial centre, has said he would fight any bonus caps from Brussels.

Policymakers worldwide have made little progress in limiting pay for an industry that caused a financial crisis in 2008, forcing bank bailouts by taxpayers.

An automatic cap of three times salary would be applied under the proposal to be discussed on Monday although a bank's owners could loosen this limit. "Shareholders could decide to go for five times," said the official.

A second official said: "There should be a final push so that there is a political agreement at the meeting of finance ministers on December 4," adding that changes to any cap were still possible.

The proposal is being tabled by officials from Cyprus, who hold the rotating presidency of the European Union and are leading preparations ahead of a meeting of the bloc's finance ministers on Tuesday.

Banks have also lobbied against the change, saying the cap could strip them of talented staff. Current EU rules already force banks to defer up to half the bonus for at least three years.

The EU has tougher bank pay curbs than guidelines laid out by the Group of 20 top global nations but some countries such as Germany want further reform.

The European Parliament, which also has a say in setting rules, wants the total of all elements of a bonus to be no more than basic salary, a step too far for some countries.

The cap is one element in a package of rules that implement a global accord, known as Basel III, requiring lenders to triple the amount of basic capital they must hold to weather shocks unaided by taxpayers.
